What is Muay Thai?
Muay Thai is referred to as the ‘Art of Eight Limbs’ or the ‘Science of Eight Limbs’ because it refers to the use of punches, kicks, elbows and knee strikes, thus using eight ‘points of contact’, as opposed to ‘two points’ (fists) used in Boxing and ‘four points’ (hands and feet) used in other more regulated Martial Art sports. Muay Thai evolved in Thailand from the ancient art of Siam known as ‘Muay Boran’, which means ‘Ancient Boxing’.
What do we offer?
Our training programme consists of Muay Thai, which uses western boxing, various kicks, knee strikes and elbow strikes making it a sound and effective fitness and self defence programme.
What comes next?
Now that you’ve started, you’ll need the correct equipment to train and protect yourself. To participate in our training, you will be required to have a club training kit. This consists of a custom club t-shirt, custom club muay thai shorts and black anklets. This is usually required after two-three weeks of training. Further to that we aim to have you working with partners within 4-6 sessions, sometimes sooner and others a little longer. For you to work with partners you’ll need the correct protective equipment, which should consist of hand wraps or inner gloves, muay thai/boxing gloves, gumshield, groin guard (a male essential). As you continue your training, we’ll advise as and when needed.
Why have rules?
As part of a team, it is important that certain rules and discipline are enforced to help aid safety and enhance your development. Furthermore, it helps to develop the correct attitude towards instructors, other students, and your own training.
It’s necessary that students are familiar with the MGRM Muay Thai etiquette and training rules that are listed below. They are not in any specific order but should always be followed. Parents and/or guardians should ensure that their child fully understands and follows them.
It's important that you the student familiarise yourself with the following.

MGRM MUAY THAI GRADING REGULATIONS
To further develop with us, it is essential that you regularly undertake club gradings. This is also a way to demonstrate your acquired skills and to continue to progress through the MGRM Muay Thai syllabus.
To undertake a grading, students are expected to complete regular training sessions appropriate for their level, at sessions identified by the chief/head instructor. Closer to a grading, the chief/head instructor will advise them if enough training has been undertaken and if it is to the standard expected for that level.
The diagram below illustrates the consecutive training hours required per term to undertake a grading for that level (a term is a 12-week training cycle). The hours required are depicted in each chevron below each level. For example, to undertake Level 1, the student will need to complete between 10-12 training hours in 12 weeks; to undertake the next Level (L2) they will need to complete 10-12 training hours in 12 weeks, etc… There is also a possibility that a solid colour can be attempted, for example from Level 3 to Level 5, by completing between 20-24 training hours in a 12-week training cycle.
NB: The training duration below is a guideline and can be subject to change without notice. Individuals can advance earlier depending upon their skill level, progress and at the chief/head instructor’s discretion. Advanced sessions including the pad work and sparring sessions are essential to continue development for level 10+. For competition, fighters are required to train at all the relevant sessions per week, including sparring sessions.
This diagram illustrates the required consecutive training hours per term (12-week cycle) to level up.
